Fluid retention – Main Causes

Fluid retention or edema, has numerous causes. Sometimes it is mild disease but other times, water retention can suggest severe disease. Fluid retention can be expressed as the swelling of feet and ankles, wrists and arms, or manifests as ascites, which is fluid accumulation in the abdomen.

One of the most common causes of fluid retention is excessive consumption of salt, even occasionally, can cause brief episodes of water retention. This can be addressed by reducing sodium in your diet.

Do not completely reduce sodium, but if ingested in small amounts, avoiding processed foods is very useful. Salt is a natural way to help the body retain water, for storage and future use, so it is an important element in the diet.

The sunburn can also lead to water retention, burns of any kind, whether from the sun or other sources lead to water retention as the body releases toxins at a high rate. This overloads the kidneys causing the body to store water in other areas of the body, such as swelling in the hands. Burns of second and third graders can create severe edema in the body.

Regular exercise and be active, raise the limb above heart level can reduce some of the swelling caused by fluid retention, keeping your feet up, or make sure your hands are above your heart, some changes diet, eating specific foods, aromatic beverages, among others, are some of the home remedies for swelling and to treat the underlying causes that produce fluid retention.
